Over the next three years, Regionaalhaigla will focus on helping to prevent domestic abuse

Estonia’s leading healthcare institution and a pioneer of innovation in the health sector, Regionaalhaigla group, has joined the initiative Employers Against Domestic Abuse. As a beacon member, Regionaalhaigla is committing to a three-year effort to raise awareness among its more than 5,300 employees and to contribute to the prevention of domestic abuse through their involvement.
“As a healthcare provider operating in Northern Estonia and the islands, our work has a far-reaching impact, and our people can make a real difference in preventing domestic abuse,” said Agris Peedu, Chairman of the Management Board of Regionaalhaigla, adding: “Caring is a core part of who we are. We cannot remain bystanders on an issue as important as this – our work already touches hundreds of thousands of people through our core services. By raising our employees’ awareness and equipping them with the skills and tools to recognise and support those in need – even on such a sensitive issue as domestic abuse – we can help build a healthier and safer society together.”
As the first healthcare organisation to join the initiative, Regionaalhaigla group’s hospitals interact with over 150,000 patients each year, in addition to their loved ones.
According to Peedu, the values of the initiative align well with Regionaalhaigla’s core principles. Together with the initiative’s learning designer and educators, a tailored programme will be developed that takes into account the specific needs and opportunities of Regionaalhaigla, engaging its staff in the journey towards a society with less violence. “Together, we can create a safe environment in our hospitals – one where people feel encouraged to seek help and receive support,” Peedu said.
“Regionaalhaigla’s decision to join the initiative marks a significant step for Estonian society as a whole,” said Triin Adamson, head of the initiative. “For the first time, a healthcare institution is addressing domestic abuse prevention in such a systematic and intentional way. While the primary goal of the initiative is to raise awareness and wellbeing among employees within each organisation, we cannot overlook the broader ripple effect this has – reaching clients, partners and communities. We applaud Regionaalhaigla for taking this responsible step, and we hope it will inspire other medical institutions to follow.”
All employers, regardless of industry or organisation size, are welcome to join the initiative. We invite businesses, non-profit organisations, foundations, and other legal entities that share our values and vision, as well as citizens who are interested in the cause.
